During the refining of precious metals, a significant volume of acidic wastewater is generated—typically containing hazardous chemicals like nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, aqua regia, and other metal residues. Key Features and Process Overview:
pH Neutralization: The acidic effluent is first subjected to a controlled chemical dosing process, where neutralizing agents such as lime or sodium hydroxide are added to raise the pH to a safe, neutral level (typically pH 6.5–8.5).
Chemical Precipitation: Dissolved heavy metals are precipitated out using suitable reagents, allowing them to be separated from the liquid phase.
Settling and Filtration: The neutralized water is then passed through a series of settling tanks and multi-grade filters to remove suspended solids and sludge. Fine polishing filters ensure maximum clarity and purity.
Sludge Handling System: The collected sludge, containing toxic metal particles and neutralized solids, is dewatered and disposed of as per hazardous waste guidelines, minimizing environmental impact.
Recycling Option: Treated water can either be safely discharged according to pollution control norms or reused within the plant for non-potable applications, further reducing water consumption.
